Black and grey rose on shoulder
Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A large rose is tattooed across the shoulder and upper arm, with its open bloom, layered petals and darker centre drawn in soft grey shading. The linework is subtle and the tonal gradients give the petals depth and a lifelike, three-dimensional look. Long blonde hair falls across part of the design, and the image is in black and grey with a warm, slightly muted tone.

The sketchbook was still on the windowsill when I got back from the funeral, held open at the rose Dad had been drawing the week before he went into the hospice. He'd done it in HB pencil first, then gone over the shadows with a stub of 4B, rubbing them in with his thumb because he said a cotton bud made everything look like cheap sweets. I've been sitting with it all afternoon, Mags, and I keep thinking about the harbour wall at Whitby, the summer we were nine, him shading the fishing boats while we ate chips out of the paper. He never once painted anything. He said colour was a liar and light was the only honest thing in a picture.

There's a box in the loft with our school reports and his roses in it. Gran's bush by the coal shed bloomed three times that year, and he drew every one of them in the evenings until the frost came. The outer petals are pale as paper, barely there, and the centre is so dark you have to tilt the page to find where the pencil stops. He used to say the trick was the middle, that you had to leave it for last and let the dark gather where it wanted to.
I rang the reunion committee this morning and told them I won't be going to the dinner at the Hilton. Instead I've booked the coach to Whitby for the first weekend in June. I'm taking the sketchbook, a fresh stub of 4B and a flask of tea, and I'm going to sit on that wall until the boats come in. Come with me if you can. We'll do the middle together, slowly, the way he showed us.
Love, Ruth
