Black and grey realism rose tattoo with shaded petals and leaves on the inner wrist and forearm, with a hand raised above it against a dark background.

Black and grey rose on the inner wrist

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large rose in shaded black and grey fills the inner wrist and lower forearm, with its petals drawn in soft gradients and highlights. Two leaves sit beside the bloom, and the bottom leaf curls toward the hand. The hand is raised against a plain black background, which makes the greyscale shading stand out clearly.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain started at half eight, the way it always did on a Thursday at Coldharbour Market, and by nine the black roses were the only stock I hadn't sold. Dad had ordered them from a grower in Kent who swore they would hold. Each bloom was the grey of a struck match, its petals layered like folded letters, and they swallowed the lamplight from the awnings so that shoppers hurried past without looking. Only Mr Pellow from the fish stall glanced over, every morning, and shook his head.

"Nobody buys a funeral flower on a wet Thursday," he called across the cobbles, pulling his cap lower.

"Somebody always does," I said, though I had no proof. Then a man in a navy mac stopped at my trestle, rain dripping from the brim of his hat, and asked for the last rose without looking at the price. He didn't haggle. He turned it slowly in his fingers, studying the shading along the outer petals as though he were checking a banknote for a watermark.

I wrapped it in brown paper while he counted coins onto the wet board. When I looked up he was already walking towards the canal, and the rain had darkened the paper to the colour of the bloom, so I couldn't tell where the flower ended and the wrapping began. I stood there with the coins sticky in my palm until Mr Pellow came over, shaking his head again, and asked whether I was going to pack up or sell the whole pavement to the river.
