The drawing had come up from the day shift folded into quarters, and Sani had been holding it for ten minutes without unfolding it properly. Bay four was asleep. A monitor chirped twice somewhere down the corridor and then went quiet, the way they did when nobody was watching closely enough to mind.

When he finally opened it, the rose filled the whole sheet. Someone had shaded it with a stub of charcoal, so the outer petals were pale where the light fell and nearly black where they folded under, and the centre curled tight, as if it had not yet decided to open. Two leaves crept out from beneath, veined so finely he could have counted every line.

"Is that for me or the bin?" The voice came from bed nine. Mrs Ada Pryce was sitting up, her reading glasses on the end of her nose and her cardigan buttoned one hole out. "My grandson made me do it at Christmas. Said I'd get bored. I'm not bored. I'm waiting for the sun to come up and decide what colour it wants to be."

Sani carried the drawing to the nurses' station and pinned it above the kettle, where the corridor light caught the charcoal and turned the petals silver at their edges. By six the first breakfast trolley came rattling past, and nobody asked what the rose was for. He thought it looked like the kind of flower that would open in its own time, whatever the hour.
