Small star tattoo near the collarbone

Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop of a person's upper back and shoulder, with their hair blurred at the top of the frame and a grey off-shoulder top below. A tiny, solid black five-pointed star sits on the skin just below the collarbone, and it is the clear focal point against the warm, orange-toned skin. The dark blue background and soft focus give the image a moody, low-key composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm has been dead nine years, but the abbey almanac still carries his star as a small black mark in the margin of February, and the clerks copy it out each winter without asking why. I was the one who asked. I was twelve, sent up the bell tower with a lantern and a bad temper, and he was sitting on the lead flashing with a pencil behind one ear, counting the sky like a man counting coins he did not trust.

"Which one is yours?" I said.

He pointed past the weathervane at a speck so faint I took it for a fly on the glass. "That one keeps the Friday bell honest," he said. "It rises a little earlier every night, and somebody has to notice when it drifts out of step."

Years later I found his notebook in the scriptorium, wedged between the psalter tables. Among the sums was a page of smudged fives, each drawn with the same hasty flick of the wrist, and beside them a line in his cramped hand: Ink falls where it likes. Make it a star anyway.

I think of that when I climb the tower now with my own lantern and a bottle of cheap ink in my habit pocket. Some nights the sky is all cloud and there is nothing to check. Other nights the little star is there, low over the chimney, exactly where he said it would be, and I mark it in the margin without troubling to make it neat.
