Mandala forearm tattoo and thigh rose
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A person in a black lace top and pale pink drawstring shorts crosses their arms, showing a black ornamental mandala tattoo on the forearm and wrist. Below, a black and grey rose tattoo with bold outlines and shading is partly visible on the upper thigh. The mandala uses fine linework and dense stippled detail, and the photo is framed loosely at the midriff with a light, blurred background.

The bread had failed to rise in the damp, so I had the afternoon watch to fill, and Ruth Okonedo came down to the galley with a pencil stub behind her ear and asked me to draw her a circle. Not a plate or a clock, she said, something with a middle you could fall into. My mother used to doodle them on the back of grocery lists, I told her, and Ruth said that was exactly what she meant.

I used the dividers from the chart table, which the second mate pretended not to notice. A small centre first, then eight petals folding out from it, then sixteen, each one tucked into the gap of the last like the teeth of two combs. Between the rings I dotted fine points, hundreds of them, until my wrist ached and the paper took on the grey sheen of a wet harbour. At the rim I drew leaves, pointed and curling back on themselves. Ruth watched the lead more than the paper, as if she were learning a language.
Off Ushant the swell came up and the pans slid across the stove. I was finishing the last leaf when she set her mug down to hold the sheet flat against the table. When she lifted it, a brown ring stayed in the exact centre of the drawing, dead true, as if the ship had made its own mandala and I had only been holding the pencil.
She carried the sheet up on deck to show the bosun's mate, and I went back to the bread. It rose by morning. Nobody asked about the ring, and I never told anyone it was the only perfect circle I managed all voyage, because the mug had done it, not me.
