Black and grey rose tattoo on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

Three people in lingerie lie close together on a bed, with their bodies cropped so no faces are visible. A shaded black and grey rose tattoo sits on the outer upper thigh of the person at the top right, and a finer line design is visible on the hip of the person at the top left. The warm pink lighting and soft film-like tones dominate the composition.

Nobody in Lowther Cross ever saw the rose flower in the wet years, and the three Pennick sisters were told often enough that it would not. It had come over the moor in their mother's lap, wrapped in a damp sack, and it had been planted against the back wall of the cottage the summer Ruth turned seven. Each winter the lane flooded to the second step, and each spring the bush put out leaves the colour of old pennies and nothing more.

The year of the great rain, Edith went down to the lane with a spade while the water was still high. Marjorie followed with the bread knife, and Ruth followed them both, carrying the lantern in one hand and her boots in the other. They dug a trench along the wall where the stones stayed dry, cut a single green stem from the old bush, and laid it in the earth with the warm stone at its back.

Nobody spoke of it after. The water went down in June. By August the stem had climbed the wall, found the gap beneath the chapel window, and pushed through it. Mr Atherton, who had cursed the flood for eleven weeks, came out with his pipe one evening and stopped in the lane to stare.

The roses were pink, the colour of the lamp in the cottage window, and they opened all at once in the dusk. The sisters stood in the lane with their hands still smelling of soil and watched the light climb through the petals, and for once none of them said it could not be done.
