Black and grey realistic tattoos on arm and thigh

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman sits on a rumpled bed in a grey sleeveless top and black underwear, with her head turned down and one hand raised into her hair. Her upper arm carries a large black and grey tattoo with realistic shading that includes floral and animal elements, and a dark animal head sits on her thigh. The soft natural light and shallow depth of field keep the focus on the tattoos against the muted room.

You have been up since four, breaking the ice on the trough with the back of the spade while the ewes stand in a steaming huddle behind the hay barn. Your father's boots are too big, stuffed with newspaper from the Ledger, and the yard light buzzes like a wasp caught in a jar. Nobody has told you the old tom went missing on Tuesday.

Mrs Akers from the lane rings at half past seven to say she's found him under her car, thin as a rake, his jaw torn where something got hold of him. You drive down with the heater roaring and the wipers losing their argument with the sleet. She has put him in a cardboard box lined with a towel printed with cabbage roses, and he looks up at you with the same yellow eyes he had at the county show in 1999, the year he was judged best in breed and then sat on the judge.

You carry him home across your knees. In the barn you build a nest of straw under the lamp and sit with your back against a bale while he breathes in short, indignant pulls. By noon the sleet has turned to snow, soft and sideways, and the hedgerow roses you cut for the windowsill have frozen into little brown fists. He sleeps. You don't.

Near dusk his ears twitch at the sound of the gate, and you realise you have been listening for your father's truck all afternoon, the way you used to listen for the kettle. It doesn't come. You stroke the thick ruff of him and count his breaths until the lamp is the only warm thing left in the barn, and you let the snow keep on falling.
