Rose bouquet across the upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A bouquet of open roses, buds, leaves and small berries is drawn in single black outlines across the upper back. The linework is fine and even, with some leaves shaded using hatching and dotted texture. The ink is black only, and the design sits centred on the shoulder blades against a plain light background.

The rose-cutter of Skerrin came down the hill with ink on both hands, because nobody on the island had seen a rose since the great wind took the walled garden into the sea. Her name was Ada Penhallow. She meant to draw.

The laird's son had asked for a bouquet for his bride, open roses with their buds and a spray of red berries, drawn in single lines with nothing filled in, the way his grandmother had painted porcelain. Ada worked four nights by the tallow lamp. She drew each petal's edge without lifting the pen, and where a leaf turned away from the light she laid fine hatched strokes beneath it so the shadow would hold. On the fifth morning she found dew on the parchment where no dew should be, and a smell of thorns in the room.

The bride came to see it. She was a thin, quiet woman who had buried two husbands to the sea and wanted no flowers. She looked a long time at the berries and said, "These grow on the cliff path, where the men go down for the gulls' eggs." Ada nodded. The bride asked whether the drawing could be taken to the cliff and left there, so the roses could bloom where no one had to tend them.

Ada carried it up at dusk and pinned it to the gorse. In the morning the cliff was white with open roses, every one shaded exactly as drawn, and the laird's son stood at the edge with his hat in his hands and could not remember what he had wanted them for.
