Black and grey roses on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm shows a cluster of three shaded roses with dark leaves, running across the arm from the wrist towards the elbow. The rose petals use soft grey shading and fine dark outlines, with highlights left as bare skin. The background is a white bed and a wooden headboard, with a hand resting in the foreground wearing a ring and grey nail polish.

Corrin had walked the Kessel Pass for eleven winters with a sack of rose cuttings strapped to her back, and by the third week of October the cuttings were the only things in the sack still green. The carters laughed at her from the inn yard at Abrenne. Who grows roses above the snowline? She didn't argue. Each evening she unwrapped the damp sacking and checked the buds the way other women checked bread.

On the last stretch, where the path narrowed to a ledge above the scree, a wind came up off the valley and tore a grey cloud into three pieces. She had to kneel on the stones and hold the cuttings against her chest while the sky emptied itself on the rocks. Below her the chimneys of the lower hamlet were already smoking. She thought about the three sisters who had paid her in advance, each wanting a bush for a grave that had no stone yet.
She reached the hut at dusk, where old Haddo kept the bell. He looked at the dark leaves and at the shaded blooms she had sketched for him on a scrap of slate, and he said nothing for a long time. Then he fetched a spade from behind the door. They planted the three cuttings in a row against the lee wall, where the stone held the day's warmth and the wind could not reach.
Corrin never saw them bloom. She took her coin and went down before the thaw. The carters say the wall at Kessel Hut is still crowded with roses in June, grey at the edges like smoke caught in a lamp, and that Haddo rings the bell twice each morning for no reason he will give.
