Black and grey roses on a shoulder
Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
Two large roses are tattooed across the shoulder, one in the upper left and a darker one beside it. The petals are rendered with soft grey shading and fine dark outlines, giving them volume and a realistic look. Thin cursive script runs above the flowers along the top of the shoulder, and a grey top covers the lower edge of the frame.

The rain had found its way under the awning again by half past six, and Ruth Okonedo was still hauling buckets of roses off the pitch when the other stallholders began to shutter up. Her uncle grew them in unheated glasshouses behind the railway arches, and the grey ones never sold well. Nobody asked for grey until it was all there was. Three dozen stems stood in a zinc tub, their heads heavy, petals gone the colour of wet slate.

A man in a waxed jacket stopped at her stall and asked, without looking up from his phone, whether the pale one was a rose or a cabbage. She told him it was a rose that had decided to go quiet. He laughed, bought four, and asked if she could write something on the paper wrap. Ruth had a good hand for that sort of thing. She wrote in small, slanting letters that the words were for his sister, and he read them twice before he folded them into his pocket and walked off into the drizzle.
He came back the following Saturday under a borrowed umbrella, with the rain coming sideways off the canal. He said his sister had read the note and sat on the kitchen floor for an hour, then rung him to say she was coming home. He didn't say anything else, and Ruth didn't ask. She only wrapped the last grey rose in newsprint, the stem still wet, and handed it across the trestle table.
When he had gone she stood under the dripping tarpaulin, watching water run off the edge in a thin unbroken line, like a sentence that had no need of full stops.
