Lace and poppy shoulder tattoo
Botanical · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
A black lace ornament covers the shoulder and upper arm, with a large red poppy at the top of the shoulder and a second poppy lower on the arm. The lace is drawn in fine black linework with a mesh-like background, while the poppies have soft red and dark shading that gives them depth. The photo is taken indoors against a dark blue wall, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

The lace-mender came down the Saltwater road the week the last loom went quiet, a roll of grey mesh under one arm and a tin of red dust under the other. Nobody in Hollin Reach had seen a poppy since the sky turned the colour of ash, so when she unrolled her cloth on the shingle and the flowers rose up through the knotting, the children ran to fetch their mothers.

Her name was Ardith. She had learnt the work from her grandmother, who had learnt it from a woman who walked out of the dead cities with one pattern folded inside her coat. Each knot in that pattern was a small door, and the old women said that if you worked them in the right order, a field would open wherever the lace touched the ground. Ardith did not believe this. She said she was only a mender of sleeves, and charged a bowl of barley for every hem she took in.
In the spring the headman's daughter, Pell, brought her a shawl torn on the drying racks, its border frayed to nothing. Ardith worked three nights by the lamp. On the third she set two poppies into the top corner, where the old pattern had left a blank, and mixed the last of the red dust with oil from the cellar jars. When she finished, the mesh beneath the petals gave off a faint warmth, the way old glass does when the sun drops behind a hill.
Pell wore the shawl to the threshing. Ardith heard nothing of a field opening, but by midsummer the ash had settled into soil along the Saltwater road, and something red pushed up through it at the edges of the yards. When Pell came to pay, Ardith refused the barley and asked only for a seed from the flower. She tucked it into the empty tin, and it rattled there the whole way home.
