The frost has got into the glasshouse again, and you are kneeling in the cold bed behind the barn, scraping at a graft with the bone-handled knife your grandfather kept for apple trees. Your breath hangs over the soil. Across the yard the ewes are bawling for hay and the gate bangs on its hinge in the wind off the moor, but you keep your hands moving. The stock has to be done before the light goes at four.

Ruth from Low Farm had brought the cuttings round in October, wrapped in wet newspaper. They came from a climbing rose that had spilled over her husband's wall for sixty years, and nobody had pruned it since the funeral. You had found it tangled with bramble, its leaves gone crisp at the edges, and you had cut it back to the knuckle anyway. It bled a clear sap that smelled of pennies and summer, and Ruth stood at the gate with her arms folded and said nothing at all.

By February the three cuttings had taken. You set them in the trench in a row, the largest at the back where the wall would shelter it, the two smaller ones leaning in towards it like neighbours at a wake. Above them the old bud on the tallest stem was still shut tight, a clenched fist of green-black wax, and you almost pinched it open to see what colour it would have been. Then you pressed the soil down with your palm and left it closed, because the frost had not finished with the bed yet, and neither had you.
