Shaded rose with pearl chain on forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large rose sits at the centre of the forearm, with its petals shaded in smooth grey gradients and fine stippled texture. Leaves surround the bloom, and a string of pearl-like beads curves around it from the upper arm down towards the wrist. The photograph is in black and white against a dark background, with the ink tones showing depth and contrast.

Dearest Nell, the rose came into bloom the same morning the pawnbroker's man came for the strand, so I have decided to take it as a sign and not a coincidence. You will remember the pearls. Mother's, forty-one of them, knotted by hand on silk gone the colour of weak tea. Mr Ferrier gave me eleven shillings for them and a look that said he'd seen better in the gutter.

I told him they were for the rent, which was true, and he said nothing about the cuffs of my good coat or the way I keep them buttoned. The rose is the one Dad planted along the orchard wall the spring before he went. Nobody pruned it after. It has grown up over the apple trees and into the pear, and this week it dropped its petals on the path in heaps the colour of old wax.
Yesterday I cut three roses for the kitchen table and picked the last of the Worcester Pearmains. The wasps were drunk on the windfalls. I sat on the step and counted what we have left: two spoons, the clock, you in Edinburgh, and a garden that doesn't need me to keep it so much as it needs me to stop fussing. Tell me how the city is treating you. Tell me you're eating something green.
Yours in haste, Maggie
