Black and grey roses on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two open roses, one large and one smaller, with two rosebuds and several leaves joined by a thin stem running down the forearm. The linework is fine and the petals are built up with soft grey shading and sharp dark accents for depth. The design is in black and grey only, and the composition climbs diagonally from the lower wrist area toward the upper arm.

The cutting has lived in a jam jar on the galley sill since Freetown, and by now you have stopped pretending it is a nuisance. Ashby, the purser, wanted it tipped over the side with the potato peel. You told him a rose is not peel. Every morning you top the jar from the scuttlebutt, measuring with the care of a chemist, and every morning the leaves look a shade more like they mean it.

Forty-one nights out of port, the bigger bloom finally opened in the dark while the watch slept. You found it at the first bell, its outer petals rolled back like the lip of a porcelain cup, the centre folded in on itself in tight, lovely spirals. Nobody saw it but you and the cook, who said it was a sin to waste fresh water on a thing that could not be eaten. He is wrong about most things, but not about the water.
The smaller bud is the trouble. It sits low on the stem, green at the tip, and you are certain it will not open before the Horn. Tom, the youngest hand, asks why you bother. You do not have an answer a boy of fifteen will understand, so you show him instead, cupping the jar so the wind cannot reach it.
When the ship makes Valparaiso in the spring, you will go ashore with the jar wrapped in your good coat and find a patch of earth behind a chandler's yard. The stem will be bare and the leaves will be sorry for themselves, but you will press the soil down with your thumbs and tell the ground what it is. Then you will write to Colchester, as you promised, and say the rose came through.
