Ornamental forearm tattoo with gold watch
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A close photograph of a forearm with a dark, ornamental tattoo that includes red shading and detailed patterning. A gold wristwatch with a black dial sits over the wrist and covers part of the design. The background is softly blurred, with muted tones of brown trousers and grey water.

Mr Pryce wanted the case back by Friday, so I sat at the bench under the lamp with the back plate off and a loupe screwed into my eye, ignoring the hum of the gas fire and the smell of Brasso drifting in from the shop front. The watch was gold and heavier than it looked. It had belonged to Edwin Lusk, who went off the breakwater in a February gale, and his widow had brought it in wrapped in a handkerchief the colour of weak tea.

Inside the lid someone had scratched a pattern: interlocking scrolls, a lattice of small leaves, and at the centre a red enamel dot no bigger than a pinhead, worn to a pink ghost. I knew that pattern. It was the same as the mosaic border in the Winter Gardens, the one my grandfather laid by hand before the war and nobody has bothered to lift since. I grew up walking over it to buy sherbet lemons.
Mrs Lusk hadn't asked me to fix the escapement. She asked me to make it run again, because her husband had wound it every night at ten and she couldn't bear the quiet in the hall. So I cleaned the pivots, replaced a mainspring the colour of a trout's back, and oiled the train until the second hand swept round as if nothing had happened out on the water.
On Friday she held it to her ear for a long time. Then she said he always kept it five minutes fast so he'd never be late for anything. I hadn't the heart to tell her I'd set it to the Greenwich signal. I left it as he liked it, and the tiles outside went on being walked over.
