Neck diamond and hand tattoos on a bearded man

Traditional · Neck · Mixed · Photo

A man in a blue jacket and striped top holds his collar with both hands, showing a bold diamond tattoo on his neck, a red rose on one hand and a dark-haired female design on the other. Finger tattoos include small symbols and letterforms. The linework is dark and bold with some shading, and the main colours are red and grey with black outlines. The shallow focus keeps the hands and neck sharp against a dark background.

The stone had been sitting in the roof dirt for longer than the pit had been working, Ada supposed, because when the fall came down on Tuesday it rolled out at her boots like a cold eye. Her brother Danny crouched and picked it from the muck with two fingers, wiped it on his trousers and held it up to the lamp so the light broke inside it into a dozen small fires.

"Don't you dare," she said.

"It's a diamond, Ada. Look at it. The buyer in Sheffield would pay for our Mam's roof and the new boots besides." He was already grinning, the way he had at nine when he'd swallowed a sixpence for a bet. "Nobody down here will say a word."

She thought of the woman painted in blue ink across the back of Old Hob's hand, dark hair falling over one eye, the red rose at her throat that the men said had been there since before the strike. Hob had worn it through three cave-ins and never once explained it. Ada had asked him once. He'd only tapped the rose and said that some things were paid for in the currency they came in.

She took the stone from Danny's palm, folded it into the handkerchief that still smelled of their mother's lavender, and pressed a petal from the dried rose in the tin lid between the cloth and the glitter. Then she went back up the gallery to the raw face where the seam had opened, and pushed the bundle deep into the crack where the coal was black enough to keep a secret. "There," she said. "Mountain can have its own back."
