Rose and mandala arm tattoos on a beach

Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman in a bikini sits on pale sand with a beach and sea behind her, her face cropped out of the frame. Both arms carry large sleeve tattoos, with the left arm showing shaded roses and the right arm showing rose and mandala-style patterns that continue onto the hand. The tattoos are in black and grey, with fine detail and soft shading against bright natural daylight.

Dear Tom,

The tide was out again this morning, so I walked to the groyne with the flask and thought of you dragging that roll of tracing paper down the stairs in Hastings. You left it on the kitchen table with a note that said keep these dry, they're the only good ones. They are dry. I have sat with them every evening since, the way I used to sit with your grandad's crosswords.

The roses are yours. I can tell from the way the petals curl over at the edges, as if somebody had pressed a thumb into wet clay and let it settle. The mandala on the second sheet is different. You've drawn it as eight rings, each one a little looser than the last, and in the outer ring you've tucked tiny dots, nineteen of them. I counted twice to be sure. Your grandad used to say a thing is finished once you can count it.

I've traced the mandala onto the back of the tide table and pinned it to the fridge under the lighthouse magnet. Sheila from next door says it looks like a clock that has forgotten what time it is. I told her that was the point. Post the rest when you can, and eat something that didn't come out of a van.

Love, Nan
