Dark arm tattoos on a woman in a pink bikini
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman in a pink strappy bikini stands on a sandy beach with long auburn hair falling forward, cropped below the face. Dark black and grey tattoos cover her left arm from the shoulder towards the wrist and extend down her right forearm, with shading and bold outlines visible. The warm, natural light and sea and headland in the background give a relaxed outdoor composition.

The tide had taken the lower steps again, so Agnes Corrie climbed the rocks at Skerra Point with a tin of soot-black ink hooked to her belt and the morning's wrack drying salt on her boots. Her grandfather had inked the harbour charts for forty years, grinding oak gall and lamp-black on the back step, and when his hands went she inherited the tin, the brushes, and a debt to the Ferryman's Guild she had never been able to read.

The debt was a drawing. Every boat that left Skerra carried a shadow on its hull, a band of hatched grey and bold black line that the Guild swore kept the herring coming in. Agnes had to renew them each spring, and this year the shadows were fading faster than she could keep up, their edges going soft like wet newsprint. On the third morning she found the cause in a rockpool: a pale crab dragging a shell that had been painted over with old lines, and under the shell a hairline crack where someone had thinned the ink to save it.
She worked all afternoon with tar and sea-salt stirred into the black, laying deep waves of shading beneath each keel until the outlines stood up sharp enough to cut. When the boats came round the point at dusk, the hulls held their shadows, and old Hamish at the slipway squinted up at them, said nothing, and tipped his cap.
Next morning the tin sat empty on the rock where she had left it. Floating in the pool beside it was a single black feather, its edge as clean as a pen stroke, and Agnes folded it into her pocket with the Guild's receipt.
