Black and grey wave tattoo on a forearm
Japanese · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A top-down photo of two forearms with the palms pressed together, set on a teal wooden surface beside a yellow mug. The right forearm carries a black and grey tattoo of stylised waves and cloud-like swirls, shaded with soft grey tones and bold dark areas. The left arm is bare apart from bracelets and a wristwatch, and the sleeves are white.

The kettle on Ward Seven has been boiling dry since half past two, and nobody has moved to fix it, because at four in the morning the only things awake are you and the sea. You can hear it through the ward's old windows, a long pull and retreat from the car park's far edge where the land gives out. Mrs Okafor in bed twelve has asked you twice whether the tide is in, and you have told her yes both times, because it always feels in at this hour.

The day nurse's handover runs in blue biro down the margins: obs every hour, bed nine's drain to be emptied, a man in bay two who will not stop asking after his boat. You write your own entries in the quiet. Temperature 36.8. Sleeping. Fluids balanced. Then you stop, pen above the page, because the grey shading on the chart's corner looks like a wave that has forgotten how to break.
At six the porter, Dev, wheels a trolley of linen past the station and leans over your shoulder to read. He says his grandfather kept a print of a great wave pinned above the stove in a flat in Leicester, the foam curled like claws, and the old man swore it was a map of where the drowned go. You laugh, but you copy the line into the margin anyway, small and neat, the way you copy everything you mean to remember.
When the light comes up grey over the car park, the kettle finally clicks off on its own. You pour two cups, one for yourself and one for Mrs Okafor, and carry hers down the corridor. She is awake, watching the glass, and when you set the cup on her table she nods at the window as if the tide has behaved itself. It has not, but it has gone out again, and you tell her so.
