Fine line world map on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are clasped together against a plain pale background, with rings and bracelets on both wrists. On the wrist of the hand at the right, a thin black outline of the continents sits on the skin, drawn with delicate single lines and no shading. The ink is black and grey, and the photograph is framed tightly on the hands and wrists.

The Queen wanted the world drawn in a single line, and she wanted it finished before the feast of Saint Brannoc. So I sat at the long table in the cold map room of Ardent Keep with a goose quill and a pot of iron-gall ink that had thickened overnight. Every coast the Guild had surveyed lay pinned under glass beside me: the Sable Reaches, the salt marshes of Tolling, the Harrow Islands where sailors swore the sea turned to glass.

I had been drawing for eleven years and had never once lifted the pen. My master, old Corwen Ashe, said a line that breaks is a border that admits it was drawn by men. So I went round the continents without stopping, the nib scratching across the vellum, down the ragged southern shelf, and out into the open ocean where nobody had sailed far enough to be certain of anything.

On the third night the Queen's steward came with a candle and a question. Why was there a small island east of Tolling, tucked behind the Harrow chain, that the Guild had never charted? I told him it was a blot where the ink had pooled. He lifted the glass from its frame and held the sheet to the lamp. 'It has a harbour,' he said, 'and a wall, and someone has written a name beside it in your hand.'

I did not rub it out. By morning the gilders had laid their leaf over the whole sheet, and that island shone in gold no thicker than a hair, joined to the rest of the world by one unbroken line that ran from the Queen's hand all the way home.
