Mandala tattoo on the upper back

Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman seen from behind stands with her arms raised and palms pressed together above her head, facing a calm sea under a pale sky. A small black mandala tattoo sits between her shoulder blades, built from fine radial linework with dotted shading in the centre. The palette is muted and warm, and the tattoo is the clear focal point against the white top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every autumn the fog came up the Hollen pass before the carters did, and every autumn Ilka sat on the step of the waystation with a ring of blue thread in her lap. She sewed the same pattern each year, starting from a single knot at the centre of a square of undyed linen. From the knot she ran eight lines outward, then sixteen, then a ring of small stitches that she made with her thumb pressed hard so the dots stood up like seed. Her mother had taught her the pattern, and her mother had learned it from the carved stones at the top of the pass, though nobody living had seen those stones since the old road was moved.

The salt merchant's boy, Tomas, wanted to learn it. He sat beside her through three autumns and kept losing count of the spokes, adding one here, dropping one there, until the lines no longer met at the middle. She took the cloth from him and unpicked his work without a word. Then she said the pattern did not need to be perfect to be followed. It only needed to be started from the centre, and the centre was always the place you could not get lost from.

That year the fog came down on the feast of Saint Brannoc, thick enough that a man could not see his own mule's ears. Tomas took the cloth from its nail, went out to the first cairn, and laid it on the stones with the dotted centre facing up. Then he walked the lines outward with his eyes shut, counting the spokes under his breath, until his boots found the gravel of the road. The carters came down behind him one by one, each holding the rope of the one before.

Ilka's cloth hung back on its nail afterwards, its middle worn pale where so many hands had touched it.
