Black and white cat portrait on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A black and white cat looks towards the viewer, with its head and upper body filling the forearm. The fur is shaded in soft greys and blacks with fine whisker lines, and the eyes and nose are rendered with precise detail. A muted brown wash and sketched grass and foliage sit behind the cat, framing it against the skin.

The summer the reservoir men came with their surveyor's poles, the whole valley went quiet in a way that unsettled the dogs. Bill Hesketh lost his late wife's wedding ring somewhere in the long grass by the stile and spent three evenings on his knees raking the verge with a garden fork, his knees complaining all the while. On the fourth evening the cat came down off the wall, walked straight past him, and pressed her nose into a tussock thick with seed heads. She sat back on her haunches and looked at him with an expression he later swore was smug.

The ring was tangled in the roots, caught on a sprig of couch grass, glinting like a fish scale in the last of the light.

Bill never did learn whether she had been guarding it or simply sitting on it. He left a saucer of milk on the wall every evening after that, and the cat drank it without once taking her eyes off the field.
