Neo-traditional tattoo of a tabby cat with green eyes and olive leaves on the inner upper arm.

Tabby cat portrait with leaves on upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A tabby cat's head is tattooed in a three-quarter view, with bold black outlines, soft grey and brown shading on the fur, and bright green eyes. A pink nose and white whiskers add detail, and a sprig of olive-gold leaves sits beneath the chin. The cat fills the centre of the frame against a plain light background, with the inner upper arm visible.

Hush now, and mind the kettle, because I am not telling this twice and the snow has shut the lane for three days. You want to know about the cat? Nobody called her that to her face. Old Hester Crowe kept the Drover's Rest on the top road, and she named the animal Sovereign, which was a joke on the whole parish, because the cat ruled the stables, the granary and the landlord's chair, in that order.

She had eyes like green bottle glass held up to a window in June, cold and always faintly amused. Folk said she could smell the weather coming. The winter the pass closed, a carter named Obadiah Lunn came in half frozen, swearing a grey shape with a striped back had led him off the road. Hester only nodded and set a saucer of milk by the hearth. Nobody argued with Sovereign about the road.

Here is the turn, and then you may sleep. That spring, when the thaw came and the lane ran brown with melt, the cat walked out of the door and did not come back. Hester searched the barns with a lantern for a week. On the eighth morning she found a sprig of olive leaves laid on the windowsill, silver side up, the way you'd leave a coin to settle a debt. Nobody ever learned who put them there, though the cat had been seen dragging a leafy branch across the yard the summer before.

So when Obadiah's grandson came up the pass the following winter with his cart, he brought a crate of oil and a kettle that had been mended twice, and he asked for a bed. Hester gave him the bed and the warmest corner. Mind the fire on your way up the stairs.
