Cat portrait in ornate frame on thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A tabby cat with bright green eyes looks upward, wearing a blue bow tie, and is framed by an ornate scrolled border with white-shaded petals and black outline roses at the lower left. The cat is rendered in full colour with soft shading on the fur, while the frame and roses use bold black linework with grey shading. The design fills the thigh, with the pale open centre of the frame behind the cat's head.

Before the carts came through the market gate, Tom Garrow lit the ovens while the cat watched from the top of the flour sacks. Mab had green eyes that caught the lamplight and held it, and she sat with her chin lifted as though she were listening for something above the rafters. Tom said she was waiting for the sun. His wife said she was waiting for the first loaf to be shared out, which was the more likely.

The blue bow tie came at Lammas, a length of ribbon from a dyer's offcut, brought by the miller's boy who had a herring in his coat for bribery. Mab let him tie it. After that she sat each morning in the round window of the back shop, the one framed with iron scrolls Tom's father had forged, and the dark lane showed through the glass behind her head like a moon on a plate.

One winter the flour ran short. The mill would not give credit, and Tom had counted his coins twice and found them the same. That morning Mab walked the length of the counter, nosed the till drawer shut, then slipped out through the cat flap into the frost. Tom followed with the lamp, past the white roses in Widow Pim's yard, to the miller's back step, where two sacks sat waiting with no name on them.

Tom mixed the dough before dawn and said nothing about it. When the sun finally came up over the chimneys, Mab was back in her window with the ribbon bright against her fur, looking up as if the light had been her idea. He broke the heel off the first loaf and set it on the sill beside her, and she ate it without once looking down.
