Realistic tabby cat head on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up of a realistic tattoo showing a tabby cat's head, with large round eyes gazing to the side and striped fur shaded across the face and neck. The fine whiskers and soft gradients in the fur give the portrait depth and a photographic quality. The work is rendered only in black and grey ink against plain skin, and the cropped framing fills the image with the design.

The cat had been sleeping on the seed trays since before the ring was named, and when the water engineers came up from the lower decks asking for her, Maud Oyelaran folded her arms and said they could ask the cat themselves. They did not like that answer. They were young and had been sent by the council in Port Hesper, and they had a clipboard and a pressure gauge that kept ticking, and they wanted the animal that could smell trouble to walk the old hab corridor with them.

Her name was Tansy, and she was grey and black in bars, the colour of the ash that drifted down from the smelters every summer. The old people said a cat always looks at the door that is not yet open, and Tansy looked to the left of everything, at the hatch where the air came through on the ninth bell. Maud had stopped asking why. You did not argue with a creature that had outlived two councils and one flood.

So Maud carried her down, grumbling, one hand under her belly like a loaf. The corridor hummed. Tansy's ears went flat, then forward, then flat again, and she twisted free and trotted past the gauges to a seam in the bulkhead where nothing showed but a hairline of frost. She sat down in front of it and stared at the wall with her great round eyes until the engineer swore and reached for the sealant.

The leak was no wider than a needle. They patched it before the shift changed. When the council sent a note asking for her to be fitted with a collar tag, Maud wrote back that the cat was asleep on the seed trays and would not be moved for a stranger, and that was the end of it.
