He sat upright in his grey brocade, lace at his throat, a black net veil pinned over one ear like a widow's afterthought, and he waited with the patience of creatures who have never once been late for anything.

Still, the red rose on Tibbs's hat had been her mother's, a wax thing rescued from a shop in Bath, and when she went looking for a bloom to make the mourning room look less like a crypt, she found the old box in the attic with the cat already sitting on it. He would not budge. She took that as a kind of answer.

The milk ran under the door, across the step and down the lane towards the churchyard, a pale ribbon the mourners stepped around without thinking. Mrs Fenwick watched it go and understood, for the first time in forty years, that she was not the one in charge of grief in her house.
