Black ankle bands on both feet
Blackwork · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two bold black bands encircle the ankles of a pair of bare feet, with the left ankle covered by a solid band and the right ankle showing a band with a thin rectangular negative-space line design. The ink is solid black with smooth, even saturation and crisp edges, set against a dark leather surface. The feet are photographed from above, centred in the frame, with the tattoos as the clear focus.

The trunk came into the lost property office at Hollin Cross on a wet Tuesday, strapped twice around its middle with black webbing so tight the buckles had bitten the leather. Ada Pring signed it in, as she signed in everything, and wrote *two straps, one with a window cut in it* in the ledger, because the ledger had no column for that sort of thing.

Nobody came for it. Umbrellas came, and gloves, and a dog lead that had been missing since spring. A man once asked after a bag of cement. The trunk sat under the hatch with its straps done up, and Ada, who had never in her life opened another person's luggage, began to find it hard to walk past.
In February the line flooded and the platform stood empty for two hours. She knelt, eased the buckle on the narrow strap, and lifted the lid. Inside were timetables from a railway that had closed in 1961, a child's wooden signal lamp, and a letter addressed to whoever kept the keys at Hollin Cross. It said only that the signal would be painted red on Thursday and that the writer would be waiting in the third carriage.
She read it twice, rebuckled the straps tighter than before, and wrote in the ledger: *collected by the owner.* On Thursday, at the hour the letter named, she stood at the platform edge with the trunk at her feet and watched the third carriage glide past without stopping. Through the window she saw a single empty seat, and she found she was smiling.
