Musical note tattoo on a finger

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand with fingers extended shows a small, solid black musical eighth note tattooed on the side of one finger, near the knuckle. The ink is a single bold silhouette with a filled note head and a curved flag, and the outline is crisp against the skin. The photograph is taken against a dark green fabric background, with the tattoo sitting in the centre-left of the frame.

The hall smells of floor polish and warm sausage rolls, and the first thing you see is the old timetable still pinned to the cloakroom door. Period four, Music, Room 9. You stand there reading it while the coats pile up behind you, and somebody's laugh goes up into the rafters like it always did.

"Still the only one who rushed the bar," Priya says, arriving at your elbow with a plastic cup of squash. She teaches infants now, she tells you, and sings the register every morning in a voice you would never have guessed at. "Come on. The piano's still in there. Brough kept it."

Room 9 has the same radiator knocking under the window and the same upright with its lid scarred by biro. You lift the lid and there it is, carved small into the underside of the wood: a solid eighth note, its flag curled like a question. You made it the week before the exam, with a compass point and far too much nerve. Mr Okonedo tapped that shape on the piano whenever you ran ahead of him, and it meant only one thing: come back, wait for the beat.

The caretaker, who is not old enough to be retired but has been, comes in jangling keys and says he never let them throw it out, out of spite as much as anything. He pushes a folded programme into your hand. Your name is printed beside a solo that was cancelled the night you walked out of the hall.

You sit down on the stool. Your hands hover over the keys, unsure whether the old rush is still there. Then you press one low note and let it ring, and the empty room answers a beat late, exactly where you left it.
