Three solid black bands on a calf

Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

Three solid black bands encircle the lower leg just below the knee, each a plain, even stripe with a gap of bare skin between them. The edges are crisp and the ink is fully saturated, with no shading or fine detail. The two photographs show the same leg from slightly different angles against a wooden floor, with dark clothing and socks at the edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tern came off the mudflat with its leg already banded, and Dora had to hold it still long enough to read the numbers. Sixty-one days since Mick had ringed the chick on Scolt Head, and the metal had stayed where he clamped it, a fraction tight, the way he always did. She turned the bird in her palm against the wind and squinted at the code.

Mick had taught her the trick years ago in the hut with the paraffin stove. Slide the ring on before the pliers close. Check the edge with a thumbnail. Never trust a band that turns. He had also marked the colony's first chicks with three black bands of tape above the ring, so the warden in the hide could spot them through a scope without writing anything down. The tape tin was still on the shelf. The hut door had hung from one hinge since the February gale, and nobody had come out to fix it, because the boat only ran when the tide said yes.

She checked the number twice against the ledger, then once more against the hand-drawn map pinned above the table, where Mick had circled the nest sites in red biro. This bird had flown to the Dutch coast in August and come back, a long way for something so small. The record card would take a week to reach the ringing office in Norfolk, and by then the bird would be somewhere else entirely.

She opened her fingers. The tern stood a moment on the sand, then lifted into the wind and hung there, dark tape on its leg tucked under, before it swung south-east over the water. Dora wrote the date in the log beneath Mick's last entry, in her own handwriting, and left the pencil lying across the page.
