Paw print trail across the top of a foot

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot rests against a textured cream wall, with a trail of solid black paw prints running diagonally across the top of the foot. The prints are simple silhouettes with no shading, and the ink is crisp and dark against the skin. The composition is close and slightly angled, with a blurred leg in the foreground and warm lighting.

Dear Ruth, Mr Calloway's grey lurcher went out through the gate on Thursday and nobody has seen him since, so I have been walking the old salt road each morning with a bucket of water and a tin of pilchards. You would laugh at me. The prints are the only map I trust out here. They run down the middle of the tarmac where the heat has softened it, one after another, four neat pads and a claw mark like a comma, then they wander off into the scrub.

On the third morning the trail doubled back. I followed it past the rusted Land Rover and the shrine of plastic roses, and found where he had stopped in the shade of a fence post. The prints there were pressed deep in a ring, as if he had turned three times before settling. I sat on the post myself and thought about how long a dog will wait for someone who does not come.

This morning there was a second trail beside his, smaller and lighter, walking alongside all the way to the cattle grid. Both sets stopped at the gate of the Calloway place, where the dust was churned up as though someone had knelt down in it. I did not go any further. Some trails are not mine to read.

I have left the bucket by the grid. Tell Mr Calloway his dog is home, or nearly. The road bends east past the dry well and the prints go on beyond it, so I think I will walk a little further tomorrow just to see. Love, Maud.
