Black cartoon cat on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small cartoon cat with large white eyes, whiskers and pointed ears is tattooed on the forearm, with its long tail curling towards the wrist. The design is filled with solid black ink and has a slightly glossy, freshly applied look. The cat sits near the centre of the frame against a blurred wooden floor and a patterned sleeve.

He was right, as he usually was about things that didn't matter. The creature was small and thin and had the cheek of a lodger who had never paid rent. It ate the cold sausage off the board, then the butter, then sat with its tail curled round its feet as if it owned the farm and the snow and both of them. Dennis tried to shoo it with a tea towel. By the third day the hens had stopped laying out of pure disapproval, and the milk churn had gone sour. Margaret found the cat asleep in the feed bin and laughed for the first time since the funeral. Dennis came out to see what the noise was and found them both looking at him, woman and cat alike, with precisely the same expression.

In March the lambs came early and the cat was there in the lambing shed, watching every birth like a midwife who had seen it all. Margaret named it Sergeant. Dennis insisted it was a Tom. Neither of them ever proved the other wrong.
