Cartoon blue ant on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A cartoon ant with a rounded purple head, large eyes and thin jointed legs is tattooed on the inner forearm, with long curved antennae trailing towards the elbow. The linework is soft and the body is filled with flat blue and lilac tones with light highlights. The skin around the design has a faint pink flush, and two black cord bracelets sit at the wrist on the left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Pell had been told the flour sack was too big for one ant, and on the third day of snow he decided that was a matter of opinion. The inn's kitchen smelled of woodsmoke and burnt sugar. Beyond the window the lane had vanished under white, the stove ticked, and his long blue antennae swept the flagstones like the trailing ends of a kite string as he set off towards the larder door.

He slipped under the cloth at the sack's corner and found the flour dusted thick as frost. Above him, boots steamed on the fender and the miller's son snored in the settle. The innkeeper's daughter, Marta, came through with a broom, humming a hymn out of tune, and swept a path of crumbs straight past his nose. Pell tried to heave one grain onto his back. It was heavier than a hymn and considerably less cooperative.

So he went home the long way, through the crack behind the bread bin, and fetched the colony. They came in a brown and blue line, forty strong, carrying crumbs in shifts while Pell stood on the bin's rim and counted them off with one leg, like a bored foreman at a gate. By dusk the larder was theirs, though the sugar tin was still out of reach.

In the morning the snow had stopped. Marta found a single sugar lump set neatly on the hearthstone, with no crumbs around it and no one to claim the job. Pell watched her from the skirting board, antennae curled, and decided that tin could wait until spring.
