Blue tarantula on a leg
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
A blue tarantula is shown from above, with its legs spread across the skin in a rough star shape. The legs have bright blue banding and dark tips, and the body is shaded in grey and black with pale highlights that give it a three-dimensional look. The subject sits centrally on a plain, slightly pinkish area of skin, with a blurred background at the edges.

Dear Margaret,

You will not believe what came off the Hull boat on Tuesday, so I am putting it down while the hall is still quiet. Mr Pryce had ordered a crate of papier-mâché palm trees for the Coronation Ball, and the carter delivered it with a lid nailed down by someone in a hurry. Under the fronds sat a tarantula as blue as a kingfisher's back, its legs banded and dark at the tips as though they had been dipped in ink.
Nobody screamed, which surprised me. Mrs Okonkwo from the tea urn set down her tray and said the creature looked as if it had come for the waltz. Then Stan, our bandleader, who is afraid of nothing except his mother, began to hum. The spider lifted one leg, then another, and we all watched it walk the length of the parquet in three-four time, pausing where the boards had worn to pale gold.
Mr Pryce wanted it swept up. I told him the floor had never been so attentive. We danced around it until closing, and it kept to the edge of the rug as though someone had taught it the steps.
On Thursday I found the crate empty and a pair of ballroom shoes on the stage with the laces tied in a neat bow. I have decided not to ask.
Yours in haste, Edie
