Black cat and sword in red flames

Japanese · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A black and white cat with its mouth open curls around a grey-bladed sword with a gold hilt, all set within stylised red, orange and yellow flames. The linework is bold and black, with smooth colour shading in the flames and bright highlights on the blade. The design fills the length of the limb in a tall, sweeping composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The forge at Caddon Reach had been cold for three winters when the grey cat first sat on your anvil and refused to leave. Nobody in the lower town kept cats that looked at a smith like that, as if it had already read the account you were trying not to open. You shooed it off twice. The third time you let it stay, because the widow Ysolde Marl was coming up the lane with her son's measurements folded in her glove, and she wanted a blade that would burn in a stranger's hand and never go out.

You built the fire with pine, rendered fat and the last of the king's oak, and the cat walked straight into the coals. Its fur went red at the edges like a paper lantern lit from within. You expected a scream. Instead it yawned, stretched and curled itself around the blade you were drawing from the quench, flames climbing its spine in long orange tongues, while the iron, grey as a gutter all morning, took on a warmth that made your palms ache.

When the sword was finished, the cat would not come off it. The widow paid you in silver and left, and you watched her go with the cat's weight still on your fingers and a faint scorch in the shape of a claw across your knuckles. She did not ask for the cat back.

Two months later a rider brought word from the border. A boy had stood alone at the pass with a sword raised, and the flames had not gone out. You kept the forge lit after that, in case anyone else came up the lane asking for a fire that would not die.
