Flame swirl tattoo on the side of the neck
Neo-trad · Neck · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of a tattoo on the side and back of a neck, showing stylised flames in orange and yellow wrapping around dark, sweeping black forms. The linework is bold with dark outlines, and the flames are shaded with lighter highlights to suggest depth. The tattoo fills most of the frame, with a plug-style ear gauge visible at the top of the image and the rest of the person cropped out.

You learn the flame before you learn the metal. On Harrow Ring the old foundry still hums in its ribs, and the only warm thing left is the furnace the salvage crews call Mother Cinder, a sealed coil that burns hydrogen down a glass throat. Your aunt Idris taught you to read it: blue means the mix is thin, yellow means it is breathing, and orange, the colour you want, means it is ready to take slag.

The dark forms come out of the dead reactors, sweeps of cooled alloy that look like smoke frozen mid-curl. Nobody melts them down anymore. You tip them into the throat one at a time and watch the fire climb their edges until the black rims glow amber and split into flames of their own. Idris used to say every piece hides a second piece inside, and that you should wait for it to show itself before you reach for the tongs.
On the last shift of the cycle the coil flares white and the alarm goes. A crew of drifters has docked at the lower lock and wants a smith who can forge a new hinge for their hauler. You go down with your tongs and a bag of cooled slag, and the captain, a tall woman with a grease-black thumbnail, studies your work for a long time without speaking. Then she takes a dark curl of alloy from her coat, sets it on the bench between you, and it is already warm.
