Black cat on a branch under a moon
Other · Mixed · Photo
A black cat silhouette sits on a curving branch with small orange-red blossoms along its length. Above it, a pale blue moon glows inside a dark, soft-edged cloud that fades into the skin. The shading is smooth and painterly, with colour ink dominating the moon halo and blossoms and black ink used for the cat, branch and cloud.

My sister Nell had already been married twice in her head by the time the caterers arrived at Hollin Farm, and the black cat had already claimed the orchard wall. She sat on the crooked plum branch as if she had booked it, tail curled round the wood, and nobody could shift her. Dad said she was waiting for the moon to clear the barn roof, which was rubbish, because the moon came up behind the church every August and everyone knew it.

The cloud arrived during the speeches. It was not rain, only a grey smudge that rolled in over the hedge and settled into the sky like something that had changed its mind. The plum had gone red in September, which Granny said meant somebody would cry before the cake was cut. Halfway through the best man's jokes, the moon slid out from behind it, pale blue at the edges, and the whole orchard went quiet as a held breath.
Tom, the groom, slipped out to the wall with a cigarette he had promised Nell he would never light again. He found me under the branch and asked whether the cat was ours. I told him she belonged to nobody, which is what the old folk say about cats that pick their own nights. He laughed and said he'd rather marry into a farm with a witch than one with a dog. We watched her stand up, stretch, and step off the branch without a sound.
When I went back inside, Nell was on the barn step in her wellies, holding the bouquet in both hands. She didn't ask where the cat had gone. She just pointed at the single red blossom lying on the stone between her feet, and said the moon had been kind enough to leave us that.
