Peacock feather on the ribs

Realism · Ribs · Mixed · Photo

A single peacock feather runs diagonally across the side of the torso, with its dark, wispy barbs shaded in black and grey. The feather's eye sits near the top edge, rendered in orange, brown and blue with soft shading that gives it depth. The skin is lit warmly against a plain background, and a hand rests at the top left of the frame.

The feather came up the stairwell of Ferrier House on a Tuesday, stuck to the wet sole of a gas man's boot, and by the time he reached the eleventh floor it had been trodden flat and lifted again. Nobody on the estate owned a peacock. Nobody on the estate had ever seen one, except on the lid of a tin of biscuits at Christmas.

Mrs Okonedo on the ninth floor took it in off the landing and pressed it between two pages of the Radio Times. She said a feather with an eye in it is a thing that was never allowed to shut, and a building with one loose in it will see who lies on the stairs. The children laughed at her. They stopped laughing when the caretaker, Dessie Rowe, swore on his mother's grave that the lift had been mended, and the eye in the feather turned, slow as a clock hand, towards the lift doors on the ground floor.

Dessie took the stairs for a month after that. He never said what he had seen in the shaft on the night the cable snapped and the car stopped four feet short of the basement, only that something in the dark had been looking at him with one bright, unblinking colour, like a lamp left on in an empty room.

When the block came down in the spring, Mrs Okonedo carried the feather out in her handbag, flat and whole, and propped it against a fence facing the street, so the building could see the sky for once.
