Black cat silhouette flash sheet

Black and grey · Flash

A flash sheet of many small and medium black cat silhouettes arranged across a white background, in sitting, standing and curled poses. Two cats face each other in the centre with their tails curling into a heart shape, beneath the lettering Cat love. The solid black fills and fine curled whisker and tail details are simple and clean.

You learn the barge's rules the way you learn the locks, by getting them wrong first. The Marigold has no cat flap and no proper bed for anyone, so the two cats who came with her from Oxford sleep wherever the stove is warmest. Mouse takes the coal bunker lid. Thimble, the black one with the crooked ear, prefers your bunk, and she has never once asked permission.

On the long pound below Hythe Bridge the cats watch the water as if it owes them money. You tie up at dusk and the towpath goes blue, and the two of them climb onto the roof and sit either side of the chimney, facing each other like bookends. The woman who sold you the boat used to say they were courting. You thought that was daft until the October Mouse went missing for three days and came back to find Thimble on the gunwale, tail curled into the shape of a question, waiting at the exact spot where the mooring rope had gone slack.

You don't mention any of this to the man from the boatyard when he comes to check the bilges. You tell him the cats are good for rats and leave it there. Then one November morning the river is high and brown, the lock gates are groaning, and you find you have been standing on the back deck for an hour with the kettle screaming behind you, unable to move, because Thimble has jumped up beside you and is leaning her weight against your leg as if to say, we're not going anywhere, are we.

You go in and make the tea. The cats come too.
