The bell over the door of the pawnshop on Tanner Street had rung twice before Sergeant Doyle noticed the cats. Eleven of them, flat and black, stuck along the glass of the display case like a row of cut paper. Each one sat with its tail curled round its paws as if it had been waiting all night for someone to come in and ask about the jewellery.

Mrs Okafor behind the counter didn't look up from her ledger. "They came with the shop," she said. "Previous owner had a fondness for them. Said they keep the lamps honest."

Doyle leaned in. The largest one, the one in the middle with the little white star at its throat, had a line of white along its flank where the light caught it, almost like a seam. He thought of the watch that had walked out of the case on Tuesday, and the fact that nobody on the street had seen a thing. Cats see plenty, his grandmother used to say, and they have the sense not to tell.

He asked her about Tuesday. She asked him whether he'd noticed the star was new. He hadn't. It had been painted on the glass the night before the theft, and now the watch was gone and the star was still there, catching the streetlamp outside like a small, unblinking eye.

When he left, the sky over the canal had gone the colour of wet slate. The cats had not moved, but one of the smaller ones at the bottom corner had turned its head towards the door, and Doyle could have sworn its tail was curled a little tighter than before.
