The blacksmith's daughter in Harrowgate Vale had a habit of drawing on everything, the flour sacks, the church door, the frost on the mill window, and her father let her, because she drew hearts and nothing else. When the lord's steward came up the valley road asking for a wedding gift that would outlast the marriage, she was the one who said it should be a heart that could not be closed. Her father laughed and said such things were not made. She took a nail and a pot of soot and drew twelve of them on the anvil shelf, one for each month, and each one came out different, because she could not keep her hand still.

The steward carried the sheet down to the castle and the lord chose the one with the spiral at its base, the one that curled like a fern that had forgotten to stop. He had it cut into a silver plate. The bride, who had wanted a plainer thing, wept when she saw it, and then she laughed, and the two of them were married in the thin spring light with the bells going out over the water meadows.
For a year the plate hung in the great hall and nobody thought about the other eleven hearts. Then the mill burned, and the steward's boy went up into the loft to save the flour sacks, and found the rest of the sheet pressed flat under a beam. He brought it down to the bride, who was by then very old and had stopped being surprised by anything. She ran her thumb over the dotted one, the open one, the one that looked like two hearts leaning on a wall, and said that every one of them had been a marriage that could have happened. Then she asked the boy to fetch the blacksmith's daughter's grandson, and the sheet went back to the forge, where it still hangs above the anvil.
