Sitting cat outline in brush strokes
Black and grey · Flash
A single-line drawing of a seated cat in profile, with ears, back, and tail traced as bold brush strokes. The front legs are suggested by short, tapered strokes and the interior is left empty. The image is black ink on a plain white background with no shading or colour.

The ghost train's last carriage was already on the lorry when Ada noticed the cat was still sitting on the ticket hut roof. It had been there since the morning they arrived at the edge of Hallam Common, upright and unbothered, its tail wrapped round its feet as if it had paid for the view. Nobody owned it. Mr Quint at the coconut shy said it had come with the field, and the men on the generator said it had come with the rain.

"Leave it," Ada said, when Dev reached for the ladder. "It knows the way."
They worked through the afternoon. Canvas came down in grey heaps, the waltzer was stripped to its bones, and the smell of diesel and wet sawdust settled over everything. Ada coiled cable until her palms stung, and each time she looked up the cat was still there, a line of black against the white sky, as if someone had drawn it in one long stroke and then lost interest in the rest.
By dusk the convoy was ready. Dev called the count, the lorries grumbled into gear, and Ada climbed into the cab of the last one with muddy boots and raw hands. When she looked back through the rear window, the roof of the ticket hut was empty. The field lay bare and dark.
She stopped at the gate and walked back alone with a torch. The grass where the hut had stood was pressed flat in a neat shape, upright, tail curled round the front paws. No frost had come yet, but the dew had, and in its grey beads the outline was perfectly clear.
