Black cat silhouette tattoo behind the ear
Blackwork · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black silhouette of a cat, with its tail curled and its head turned upward, is tattooed on the side of the neck just behind the ear. The design uses bold, filled shapes with no interior linework or shading. The photograph is black and white and shows only the ear, a couple of ear piercings and part of the neck and hair.

Mother says a cat that black belongs to the dead, so she wraps the milk jug in a cloth each evening to keep the spirits out of it. I think the cat is simply lazy about the moon.

When you come home at harvest, bring the good ink from Alexandria, the kind that does not run in damp. I want to draw her properly on the back of this letter before she goes, though I doubt she will hold still for it. Tell Father the grain is counted. Tell him the cat is counted too, under the heading of lesser debts, where she will sit for ever looking up at something none of us can see.
