Black cat silhouette on the ear
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up photograph of an ear with a small cat silhouette tattooed on the lower outer ear. The cat is shown in profile with its head lowered and its tail curving up and over its back, filled with solid black ink and no interior detail. The soft skin tones and dark hair at the top left keep the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Morag,

The supply boat came in on Tuesday with the post and a sack of flour gone damp, and Skerry came off it under Angus's arm like a sack himself. You'll remember I said we had no use for another mouth. I was wrong, as you like to remind me. He has eaten two mice out of the meal store and one of Angus's good boots, which I would not have forgiven a person for.
He's black all over, not a white hair on him, so the bairns call him the ink-pot. He walks the harbour wall at dusk with his head lowered, as if he's reading the stones, and when the wind turns he lifts his tail up over his back like a rope somebody's hauling. I have never seen a cat so serious about nothing.
Last week he went missing for two nights. I searched the lower dunes with a lantern and called until my voice gave out. On the third morning I found him on the step of the old net loft, sitting exactly where Duncan used to mend the lines before he went out for the last time. He had a gull feather in his mouth and no interest in explaining himself.
I've decided he's been keeping watch for something, and I've decided not to ask what. The boat is due Thursday. Come on it if you can. Bring your own tea, and bring your sense of humour, because the ink-pot has taken a fancy to your knitting bag.
Love, Isla
