Small black creature tattoo behind the ear

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small, stylised animal figure in solid black ink sits behind the ear, with a spiky, flowing mane or crest along its top edge and a curling tail-like line at the bottom. The lines are bold and tapered, with no shading or grey wash, and the design sits against plain skin with loose hair at the left edge of the frame. The photograph is a close, slightly soft crop that focuses on the tattoo and the ear.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fox came down from the hill the week the mill closed, and nobody in Harrow Dale thought much of it until the dance at the Corn Exchange. Old Mrs Pennock swore the creature had a crest like a cockerel's, spiked and smoky, and a tail that curled back on itself like a fern in March. She said it stood in the doorway with the rain running off its brush and watched the fiddlers tune, and that no dog in the room would go near it.

Wilf Carrow, who was nineteen and had too much pride for his own good, asked it to dance. He said afterwards he only meant it as a joke. The fox looked at him for a long while, then stepped out onto the boards, and the fiddler, who had been drinking since noon, struck up a reel without being told to.

Nobody saw the feet move. Wilf swore they never touched the floorboards, and the lamps went low and amber while the fox turned, and the spiked crest threw shadows up the wall like flames. When the tune ended it was gone, and in its place stood a girl with rain in her hair, holding out her hand to him. Wilf took it. By the spring they were married, and the mill stayed shut, and whenever the wind came up the valley Wilf would touch the place behind his left ear where the little black creature had settled, as if to make sure it was still keeping time.
