A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Tobias had been told three times that the cats were not to enter the scriptorium, and three times he had found one of them sitting on the vellum. This morning it was Vespers, a black tom with a torn ear, planted square on the gold leaf he had spent a week laying for the initial. Tobias lifted him off with two fingers. "You will be the death of the abbot's patience," he said, and Vespers blinked at him as though that were a sensible remark.

The other cat, Compline, was a slim, unhurried female who belonged to nobody and came and went through the cloister gate as she pleased. The brothers claimed they had seen the two of them touch noses at the well. Brother Edwin, who kept the bees and approved of very little, said it was foolish to name a cat after an hour of prayer when the cat did not pray. Tobias said nothing. He was busy fitting a sliver of gilt into the margin with a wet brush and holding his breath.

When the abbot came to inspect the work, he found both cats curled on the windowsill, tails wound so that their two black shapes made a single heart against the glass. Nobody moved them. The abbot looked for a long while, then went back across the yard without mentioning rules.

Tobias finished the page that afternoon. The initial was perfect except for one small paw print in the corner, which he decided to leave where it was.
