Small black heart on a finger

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are pressed together with the fingers curled to form a heart outline, photographed in a instant-film style frame. A small, solid black heart is tattooed on the side of one finger, near the knuckle. The ink is dark and crisp against the skin, and the subject fills the centre of the frame against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

In the village of Sallow Mere, where the river bent twice before reaching the mill, there lived a bell-ringer named Amos Trewin who could not say the word for love. His tongue had stuck to the roof of his mouth the winter his mother died, and after that he spoke only in nods and in the shapes his hands made.

The miller's girl, Nell Harrow, understood him better than anyone. She kept a tin of cough sweets in her apron and a bent pin for mending nets. Each Sunday she walked up the lane to the church and waited for him to finish ringing. One day she held up her two hands, fingers curled and touching, to make the shape of the heart printed on the card her aunt had sent from Scarborough. Amos looked at it a long time. Then he took a pen from the vestry desk and inked a small black heart on the side of his own finger, where he could see it every time he pulled the rope.

Years went by. The mill wheel rotted and was rebuilt. Nell married a farrier from the next valley and moved away, and Amos kept ringing for every christening and funeral. People said he had never spoken again, though he had never needed to.

When they buried Amos, the sexton noticed the heart on his finger had faded to a grey smudge. He also found a loop of white thread tied into the bell rope, knotted into the shape of a heart. Nobody had the heart to cut it down.
