Fine line swallow tattoos on the hand

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Four photographs show the same hand from different angles, with a fine line black swallow in flight across the base of the palm near the wrist. A much smaller swallow sits on the side of one finger. The linework is thin and mostly solid black with light feathering, and the soft, pale background keeps the focus on the tattoos.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The swallows came back to Cullen harbour the week the herring boats went out, and you counted them from the sea wall the way other people counted sheep. Your father always said a swallow that comes home means the sea has given something back. Mrs Pryce at the chandlery called that nonsense, then bought a tin of tar from you on credit anyway.

The swallow that mattered was the small one that nested under the ferry shed roof, the one with a torn tail feather. You fed it crumbs from the tea tray every morning until your hand learned its weight, and by June it would sit on your knuckle while the gulls screamed over the nets. Dorothy at the post office said a wild thing could never trust a hand, and that it would die in the first gale.

The gale came in September. The ferry went down off the Skerries with Tom Ballantyne aboard, and for three days the lifeboat quartered the water and found nothing but oil and a single oar. On the fourth morning the swallow was waiting on your windowsill, though the sash had been shut all night and the frost lay thick on the glass outside. It would not leave when you opened the door, so you understood it had gone out with the fleet and come back alone.

You walked down to the end of the pier with the bird pressed against your palm, its heartbeat quick and light. The tide was turning. You opened your hand to the wind, and it lifted once, looped over the harbour wall, and went south after the boats.
