Black cat tattoo on the ear

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black cat with an arched back, raised tail and a white highlight for its eye sits along the outer rim of the ear. The linework is bold and filled, with little or no shading, and the design is entirely black ink. The close-up composition is centred on the ear, with dark hair and soft skin tones around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The shepherds of Kessen Gap said the black cat came down from the high col every autumn, when the first snow shut the road. She had a white star over one eye and walked the rock rim above the track with her back arched against the wind. Nobody owned her. Old Maud Garrow left a dish of goat's milk on the cairn each night, and in return the cat walked ahead of the mules on the north path and turned them back wherever the ledge had begun to crumble.

One November a salt trader named Idris Pell came over the pass with eleven mules and no patience. He laughed at the milk dish and kicked it into the scree, saying a cat was only a cat and he would not wait for the mist to lift. The cat sat on a boulder and watched him go, tail raised like a question mark, and she did not follow.

Two days later Maud found the mules huddled below the lip of the gap, the trader's coat snagged on a thorn bush and no sign of the man himself. She climbed up with a lantern and found him wedged in a crack, his leg bent wrong, calling into the white air. The cat was already there, pacing the edge of the drop with her tail lashing. Maud followed that tail to the hemp rope they had strung across the gap years before, and hauled him out by it.

Pell paid for the milk after that, and every autumn he left a copper coin beside the dish. The cat drank the milk and ignored the coin. By spring the coin had gone green in the rain, and the cat still walked the high rim at dusk, black against the last light, watching the road for men who had forgotten how to listen.
