Black cat with red collar behind the ear
Neck · Mixed · Photo
A small seated black cat silhouette sits on the neck behind an ear, with its tail curving up beside its body. The cat is filled with solid black ink with a smooth, dense finish, and a thin red band forms its collar. The soft, shallow-focus photograph shows the ear with two stud earrings at the top left and dark hair at the right.

Nobody on Harrow Point knew whose cat it was, only that it sat on the windowsill of the eleventh floor every evening at six, facing the car park as if it were waiting for a bus. It wore a red ribbon round its neck, bright as a pillar box, and the children said the old woman in flat 114 had tied it there before the council moved her out to the bungalows by the reservoir.

Mrs Okafor in 109 said the cat belonged to no one and everyone, and that a cat with a collar was a cat that had been loved once and was still waiting to be told so. When the lift broke in March, the cat came down eleven flights in an afternoon and was found by the bin store, sitting neat as a lamp with its tail curled over its paws. Dev from the second floor carried it back up inside his coat.
That winter the boiler failed across the whole block and people knocked on each other's doors for warmth. The cat went from door to door, and wherever it sat, a family ended up sitting with it. By February the Kowalskis were sharing their soup with the flat next to theirs, and the old woman's nephew had come to collect her things and found a note knotted into the ribbon, written in careful capitals: LOOK AFTER THE SILL.
On the first warm evening the windows went up along the block, and the cat stopped sitting on the ledge. Mrs Okafor said it had gone looking for the old woman at the reservoir, and that a loved cat always finds its way back to its people, even when the people have moved. Nobody argued. The ribbon stayed red all summer, and when the new tenant in 114 asked whose cat it was, Dev just shrugged and said it was the block's now.
