Black cat with roses and Wednesday banner
Neo-trad · Colour · Flash
A black cat faces forward with bright yellow eyes, its head wreathed in pink peonies, camellias and wild roses with green leaves. A cream banner across the bottom carries the word Wednesday in black script. Bold black outlines and soft shading give the cat fur texture, while the flowers use pink and yellow tones on a parchment-coloured background.

Mrs Pardoe had not asked for a cat, and she certainly had not asked for one with yellow eyes that stared at her kettle as if it owed him money. He turned up on the Wednesday after the Michaelmas fair and sat on her coal bucket until she gave him the heel of the loaf. She named him Wednesday because that was the day he arrived, and because she had decided he was the sort of animal who would need a day of his own.

In Little Coldharbour the flowers came early that year and nobody could say why. Peonies pushed up through the churchyard wall, camellias opened on the bare vicarage hedge, and the wild roses along the mill lane climbed over the gate before the frost had properly gone. Each Wednesday the black cat walked the lane with his tail high, and each Wednesday he came home with a fresh bloom caught in the fur about his ears, as if he had been crowned and did not care who knew it.
The vicar's wife said a black cat trailing flowers was an omen, and she meant to have the creature taken to the river. Mrs Pardoe only asked her to wait until the following Wednesday. On that morning the whole village found its gardens bare, every bloom gone in the night, and the cat sat on the churchyard wall with a camellia tucked behind each ear, a rose at his throat, and a peony petal stuck to his whiskers.
Mrs Pardoe filled a saucer with milk and set it on the step. The vicar's wife, passing with her shopping, paused at the gate and did not mention the river again.
